2048
2048 was written by a nineteen-year-old in a weekend and then played by tens of millions of people. Ten years on, it is still the cleanest puzzle design on the browser: four arrow keys, one goal, no timer, no ads in the middle of a move.

2048 tips and strategy
- Pick a corner and never move your largest tile out of it. This is the single most important habit in 2048.
- Choose two directions you will use, and stick to them. Most strong players only swipe left and up.
- Keep one row as a sorted ladder β largest at one end, smallest at the other. It makes merges automatic.
- Do not chase a 4 that appears in an awkward spot. Chasing small tiles early is how boards lock up.
- Once you have a 1024 tile, treat every move as defensive. At that stage you lose by running out of space, not by making wrong merges.
About 2048
The board is a four-by-four grid. Swiping in a direction slides every tile as far as it will go, and two tiles of the same value merge into one tile of double the value. After each move, a new 2 or 4 appears in a random empty square. Reach a tile worth 2048 and you have won.
The genius is the pressure. Because a new tile spawns after every move, standing still is impossible, and empty space is the actual resource you are managing. Most losses are not caused by bad luck β they are caused by filling the board with a trapped large tile in a corner.
It is open source and runs entirely offline once loaded, so there is no server, no account and no way to lose progress to a connection drop. Games save locally.
2048: frequently asked questions
Is 2048 free?
Yes. 2048 is free to play in the browser and is open-source software. There is no account, no download and no payment.
How do you play 2048?
Use the arrow keys (or swipe on mobile) to slide every tile in one direction. Tiles with the same number merge when they collide, and a new tile appears after each move.
What is the highest possible tile in 2048?
Technically 131072 is the theoretical maximum on a 4x4 board. Practically, reaching 8192 is already an exceptional game for a human player.
Why do I keep losing 2048?
Nearly always because the largest tile is not locked in a corner. Once a big tile sits in the middle of the board, every subsequent move loses you space.
